Literacy, Laughs and Superheroes in the Spotlight at Books, Blankets & Family Fun Day
Grayson: I think it's fantastic.
Tamaria: I love to read.
Ken Slats: Which made Books, Blankets and Family Fun the perfect setting for Butler Elementary's Tamaria and Isle of Hope's Grayson.
Grayson: I like nonfiction books because they got more characters and chapters.
Dr. David Bringman, PT DPT: Being able to read a book takes you to worlds you might not ever be able to go to, to learn things about other cultures, about other places around the globe.
Dr. Angie Lewis: Reading allows students to imagine the impossible. When we think about literacy, we're not just talking about learning how to read, We're talking about learning how to imagine.
Ken Slats: Daffin Park was turned into that imagination land books, blankets and a band. Food, fun and festivities.
Connie Hall: And it's so good to see all the children in the schools represented here today because this is an event that shows children how important reading is in their lives.
Dr. Tonia Howard-Hall: When you think about the North Star, you think about direction. You think about guidance. You think about where it would take you. So with literally being our North Star. That is our focal point. Our focal point is always literature because we know that with literacy we can go anywhere from here.
Tiona: I think is great for people who don't know how to read they can learn. And also people here could teach them and they could get used to the subject and like they could comprehend.
Connie Hall: We need to let the public see our vested interest in bringing reading into the lives of the children in every way we can.
Dr. David Bringman, PT DPT: And this is just a showcase, again, of how dedicated we as a school system are to making sure that every child has materials that they can read at home with their parents.
Ken Slats: From their homes to our schools to adulthood. Students at SCCPSS will follow that North Star towards success. I'm Ken Slats, reporting.
